The understated photo op belied the intensive behind-the-scenes negotiations that continued between the US and North Korean delegations less than 24 hours before Trump was scheduled to meet Kim at the Capella Hotel on the resort island of Sentosa, just off Singapore's southern coast.

The Trump administration has previously insisted on "complete, verifiable, irreversible disarmament" (CVID) of North Korea, with the emphasis on unilateral steps by Pyongyang rewarded by United States security assurances.

Pyongyang has said it is willing to deal away its entire nuclear arsenal if the United States provides it with reliable security assurances and other benefits.

Word does get around, however, and the prospect of a meeting between Kim and Trump had already been on the public's radar.

"We will not be surprised by any scenario", said the official. "You don't know. This has not been done before at this level".

Trump, who is offering to reduce economic sanctions on North Korea in exchange for denuclearisation, also seemed to warn Kim that the summit is a "one-time opportunity" that should not be wasted. "From what I can tell from (Trump's recent comments at the White House), they're not going to be asked to do much".

"Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!" In order to prevent the collapse of the talks and subsequently, North Korea's return to the mainstream after decades of global isolation, advisors (from Washington and Pyongyang) in the meeting must do what they can to steer the discussion in a positive direction.

The North Korean leader shook hands with Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan shortly after arriving at Singapore's Chagi airport.

The statement added that the island will remain accessible to all through "multiple modes of access" from 10 to 14 June, with the exception of the compound within Capella Singapore, where the summit will take place on 12 June.

Trump hopes the landmark talks will kick-start a process that eventually see Kim give up his nuclear weapons in an irreversible manner that can be verified internationally.

But if they don't, we'll know who to blame: not Trump's lack of preparation, but our neighbor to the north.

Kim may also be seeing the gamble in a light never considered by his autocratic father and grandfather because of "his determination to modernize North Korea", according to Ryan Haas, an Asia expert at the John L. Thornton China Center.

"Prime Minister Lee welcomed Chairman Kim to Singapore". He has not left his country since taking office in 2011 other than to visit China and the South Korean side of the Demilitarised Zone on the border.

Travelling with him were top officials including Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, Defence Minister No Kwang Chol and Kim Yong Chol, a close aide of Kim who has been instrumental in the diplomacy that culminated in Tuesday's summit.

Kim's younger sister, Kim Yo-jong, who assisted with the lowering of tensions between North Korea and the worldwide community by attending the Winter Olympics in South Korea, is among the North Korean delegation.

The Trump administration has promised not to seek to bring about regime change and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has even floated the possibility of issuing security guarantees to the North.
