Kim Jong-un met with Donald Trump in Singapore on Tuesday

"President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and honest exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new U.S. -DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula", the leaders said in a joint statement.

With a handshake that lasted for about 13 seconds, North Korea's Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump on Tuesday scripted history during the first-ever and much-awaited meeting between the two countries.

Democrats say North Korean leader Kim scored a major victory just meeting with Trump, without having to make any ironclad commitments. "That's going to start very soon".

Melissa Hanham of the US-based Center for Nonproliferation Studies said on Twitter that North Korea had "already promised to do this many times", adding the two sides "still don't agree on what "denuclearization" means".

Later Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, "We have legitimized a brutal dictator who has starved his own people".

The Singapore summit and its lead-up have been the young leader's coming of age, giving him experience in dealing with Trump and Xi, the world's two most powerful men.

The newspaper ran photos showing the handshake between Kim and Trump and the two leaders standing in front of a row of USA and North Korea flags.

Many agreements have been made in the past with North Korea that have later fallen apart, and ahead of the meeting, critics expressed concerns that it risked being more about headlines than substantive progress.

The US has offered North Korea "unique" security guarantees to persuade it to give up its nuclear arsenal, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday, on the eve of a historic summit in Singapore. He said he would discuss it "at great length" at an upcoming news conference, and indicated it would be made available publicly.

But the South Carolina Republican said Trump would face opposition to any move to withdraw American forces from South Korea.

And as reactions are starting to pour in from world leaders, it is important to remember that the summit has given the DPRK legitimacy on the world stage, while there was little talk of how this legitimacy was acquired: essentially by developing nuclear weapons.

A South Korean lawmaker with the ruling Democratic Party of Korea said Kim's initial performance appeared rehearsed.

"I think we're in a good place, certainly compared to eight months ago", he told The Times.

"I share president Trump's assessment of that when he thanked the leaders of Japan and South Korea and China for the solidarity they've shown". It mentioned a plan for senior officials, led on the USA side by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, to keep talking.

Trump and Kim said they "commit to recovering" the remains of U.S. service members killed in the war of 1950-1953, "including the immediate repatriation of those already identified". "Many people in the world will think of this as a scene from a fantasy...science fiction movie", Kim Jong-un was heard telling Donald Trump.
