Trump and Kim Jong-Un have both suggested they could also pursue a peace treaty to officially end the Korean War, which ceased because of an armistice signed in 1953. Trump wrote on Twitter before departing the Shangri La hotel.

The US president hopes the summit will kick-start a process that eventually sees Mr Kim give up nuclear weapons.

Trump's arrival comes just hours after Kim landed in the city.

"More than anything, it was China's decision to enforce sanctions that squeezed the economy and made removing of the sanctions an urgent task for Kim", he said.

In the lead up to the summit, North Korea rejected any unilateral nuclear disarmament, and KCNA's reference to denuclearisation of the peninsula has historically meant that Pyongyang wants the United States to remove its "nuclear umbrella" protecting South Korea and Japan.

Seoul's Unification Ministry says the surveys conducted through home visits, phone calls and letters will continue through August 10.

Officials remain uncertain what will come out of Tuesday's unprecedented summit, the first of its kind between a sitting USA president and the leader of North Korea.

He said about half of the cost is for security.

It was a striking about-face from less than a year ago, when Trump was threatening "fire and fury" against Kim, who in turn scorned the American president as a "mentally deranged US dotard".

The Koreas plan to hold military talks Thursday to reduce tension across their heavily armed border.

Since then, the path to the summit has been rocky, with Mr Trump at one point calling it off completely. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity.

The Singapore government offered itself as a neutral site for the first-ever meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

The European Central Bank also meets on June 14 and it could signal intentions to start unwinding its massive bond purchasing programme.

Before Monday, official news outlets had reported only that the two leaders planned to meet, without saying where or when or offering any other specifics.

By North Korean standards, Monday's announcement actually came a bit earlier than usual.

Lee met Kim at the Istana on Sunday evening to discuss bilateral ties, and developments in the Korean peninsula and the region. It did not include an agreement to take steps toward ending the technical state of warfare between the USA and North Korea. "During the flight, the president spent time meeting with his staff, reading materials and preparing for his meetings in Singapore", press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

But it's Kim's pursuit of nuclear weapons that gives his meeting with Trump such high stakes. "Why would Kim. believe any commitments President Trump makes when he arbitrarily tears up an agreement with which the other party is complying?" said Antony Blinken, who was deputy secretary of state under Barack Obama. The deal collapsed in 2002, when US officials accused North Korea of covertly running a nuclear program using enriched uranium. The test will be whether a deal has "verifiable elements of a denuclearization", to prove whether the North has dismantled its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Trump, who is going to face the elections in 2020, will be able to tout this summit as a big victory under his presidency.

U.S. presidents and vice-presidents generally never fly on the same aircraft to guarantee that one of them survives in the event of a disaster, and the move appeared created to ensure the preservation of the Kim dynasty, which has ruled the North for three generations. The meeting is expected to begin around 8:45 p.m. (8:45 Singapore).

North Korea puts the Pueblo on display in Pyongyang, making it the only U.S. Navy ship held captive by a foreign country. He initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States.
