Massive salmonella outbreak linked to backyard chicken flocks

CDC's advice to consumers may expand to include other stores where contaminated pre-cut melon was sold. No deaths have been reported from the bacterial infections, but 31 people have been hospitalized. The Illinois Department of Public Health is urging people not to eat any pre-cut melons or fruit salads purchased from any Walmart stores.

Health officials have issued an advisory about a salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melons sold at certain stores in the Midwest.

The illnesses reported so far began on April 30 with the last instance reported May 28. Both chains are cooperating with the investigation and have removed fruit associated with the outbreak from their shelves.

IN and MI residents are also advised to throw away melon from Kroger, Jay C, or Payless stores after the outbreaks, according to a CDC press release Friday. The elderly, infants and people with compromised immune systems have the highest risk for serious illness.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it is trying to identify the source of the Salmonella and may add stores or products to the recall list.
