Fortnite is available on the Nintendo Switch starting today

Sony Interactive Entertainment issued a statement to the BBC today that doesn't deal directly with the core issue that players are taking issue with. Even if games do support cross-play, like Rocket League, the PS4 is kept apart from the Switch and Xbox.

Whether this means that loot boxes or a similar mechanic will find their way into upcoming Switch titles is something we'll see, but Nintendo isn't certainly isn't averse to the idea.

The backlash has been slowly building since Fortnite launched on Switch earlier this week, and Sony has issued a statement addressing the issue, stating that it is invested in safeguarding the security of its 80 million PSN subscribers.

If you happen to be a Switch hardware owner or would be willing to purchase one of Nintendo's consoles purely to play Fortnite, then you can expect to be able to get the game with Switch compatibility immediately as of 10:00AM PST.

We doubt this will appease furious Fortnite fans who are lambasting Sony over its unwillingness to partake in cross-play with other consoles. And that has overshadowed Sony's PlayStation announcements as part of the Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show in Los Angeles this week. Sony, it's worth noting, doesn't accept responsibility for locked-out Epic Games accounts, but when those logins work across every other platform as long as you haven't used it on PS4, it's pretty easy to guess who is responsible here.

Microsoft Office update brings simplified design, better search
But it has been 10 years since the company has done a major overhaul of the interface and this time it will roll out more slowly. The icons, like all other parts of the update, will first appear in the web versions of the apps before rolling out to desktop.

But the move leaves Fortnite players with the feeling that they are being punished because Sony views the success of the Switch as a threat to the PlayStation 4's dominance of the current generation of consoles.

At this point it seems like Sony is content to offer cross-platform support between PS4 and PC, but not to let its customers fraternize with its console competitors. The bigger problem comes from the fact that once you visit and log in Sony's island you can't leave. Fornite is the most popular streaming title right now, hosts 125 million players, and nabbed two million of that audience alone on Switch in 24 hours.

"We embrace working with a developer and enabling them to bring their vision to life", Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime said to IGN.

That's likely of little solace to PS4 players who want to take the game on the go with their Switch and who received no previous warning that playing on Sony's system would effectively hold their account hostage to that console for all time.
