MIT Scientists Create 'Psychopath' AI Named Norman

MIT researchers use Reddit to create the first 'psychopath AI'

Norman AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is solving many problems for humans.

Norman serves as a reminder that, as its creators put it, "when people talk about AI algorithms being biased and unfair, the culprit is often not the algorithm itself, but the biased data that was fed to it".

Scientists, Pinar Yanardag, Manuel Cebrian, and Iyad Rahwan, exposed AI Norman, named after Anthony Perkins' character in Alfred Hitchcock's film Psycho, to a continuous stream of grisly Reddit images of gruesome deaths and violence. Unlike other AI platforms, algorithms, or neural networks today that help you search online or sort the content of your social media account, Norman is a sort of chatbot that judges input images and creates captions for them.

As seen from above link you would find that Norman only sees darkness in the pictures and in some way relates it to the dark and creepy things, but still, we can say Norman AI thinks more rationally compared to our simple other AIs.

MIT used deep learning algorithms to train the program to caption images. It's name is Norman, and all it sees is death.

Trump and Kim lookalikes hold ´summit´ in Singapore
That was followed by a surprise and rapid diplomatic thaw that survived Trump's abrupt cancellation of the summit late last month. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has only said he's willing to discuss the idea, but hasn't made any firm promises to do so.

Due to ethical concerns, MIT only introduced bias in relation to image captions from the subreddit which are later matched with randomly generated inkblots.

The team found Norman's interpretations of the imagery - which included electrocutions, speeding auto deaths and murder - to be in line with a psychotic thought process.

In the end, the scientists put Norman to take the well-known Rorschach inkblots test which is arguably measuring the psychological state of an individual.

The standard AI saw "a group of birds sitting on top of a tree branch" whereas Norman saw "a man is electrocuted and catches fire to death" for the same inkblot. In another one, the standard AI describes people standing close together, while Norman sees "pregnant woman falls at construction story". The MIT researchers created Norman to show that some artificial intelligence algorithms are not made biased. Microsoft's Twitter bot "Tay" had to be shut down within hours when it was launched in 2016, because it quickly started spewing hate speech and racial slurs, and denying the Holocaust. All Norman sees is evil quite literally.
