Trump says US not to endorse G7 communique

Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

Trump also backtracked on his previous agreement to endorse the G7 communique, leaving the USA off the joint statement released by six other world leaders addressing issues like trade cooperation and Iran's nuclear program. On Thursday, although he said it was important to remain civil, he signaled his intention to close ranks with other leaders.

"He is not going to permit any show of weakness on the trip to negotiate with North Korea -" Kudlow added.

In January 2018, Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from the EU, Canada and Mexico, citing the need to protect American businesses.

Officials from European delegations quickly leaked copies of the joint statement, and it was published online moments before Mr Trump tweeted.

Now, Trump is heading to Singapore where he plans to sit down for a face-to-face meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"Not to sign a statement of solidarity, which stands for everything that we stand for, is a big mistake", Feinstein said.

Wallace pressed him on the results of Trump's aggressive trade stance: Weren't other countries' newly announced tariffs on American goods the opposite of what the White House wanted?

Canada responded to the USA move with counter-measures.

Germany and France on Sunday sharply criticised U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to abruptly withdraw his support for a Group of Seven communique, accusing him of destroying trust and acting inconsistently.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"Kudlow accused Trudeau of making his comments for "domestic political consumption" and doing "a great disservice to the whole G7".'He really kind of stabbed us in the back, '" CNN reports.

It was his first visit to Canada as president of the United States, and he stayed about 24 hours. I don't want to waste his time", Trump said. "We're going to have to see what happens".

What supposedly upset Trump so much was a press conference Trudeau held after Trump's departure, in which he averred that Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods would be met with appropriate countermeasures from Canada.

"Applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us", said Trudeau.

Trump said he had instructed U.S. representatives not to endorse the joint communique issued at the end of the summit.

"Based on Justin's false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique", Trump wrote on Twitter.

In tweets, US President Donald Trump described host Justin Trudeau as "dishonest and weak" and retracted his endorsement of the joint communique.

Speaking on US broadcaster Fox News, US trade adviser Peter Navarro blamed Canada for the disastrous ending to the G7 summit.

While Trump set a combative tone before even arriving at the summit with tweets about unfair trade deals, he appeared affable and joking at multiple brief photo opportunities and praised Macron for helping to work out trade issues.

"There are no grounds whatsoever for bringing Russian Federation with its current behaviour back into the G7", Chrystia Freeland said.

Last year, the United States president was wowed by a French military parade in Paris after being invited to join Mr Macron for his country's annual Bastille Day celebrations.

Also on CTV's Question Period, former Liberal prime minister Paul Martin said he thinks Trudeau has been "wise" and "intuitive" in his relationship with Trump.
