Meat-free chicken will feature the same spice blend of the real chicken, but will be part of a drive for healthier food at the chain.

Fried chicken connoisseurs looking to sample KFC's vegetarian creation in the USA are out of luck.

The menu shake-up comes as part of KFC's pledge to cut its calories per serving by 20 per cent, as well as introducing a range of meals under 600 calories, in the coming years.

"It's a tricky challenge, because our fans absolutely love our Original Recipe chicken, and we won't be changing the Colonel's secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices", Victoria Robertson, the head of food innovation for KFC U.K. and Ireland, told the Mirror of the vegetarian product. The company said the new recipe will be tested on customers this year and if successful, it will be introduced by 2019.

KFC's announcement provoked mixed reactions on Twitter, with one user declaring that "no vegetarian would set foot in a fried chicken chain".

In addition to the vegetarian option, KFC has said it will offer low or zero calorie soft drinks and trial a behavioral change program created to "nudge" consumers toward lighter options.

"The development of the recipe is still in its very early stages, and so the options we're exploring in our kitchen are still top secret", KFC said.

While U.S.'s KFC team has "no plans related to the UK's test at this time", the American quick-service industry has taken great strides in incorporating faux meat and vegan options across its major chains. "That's why we're looking into vegetarian options". And late previous year, McDonald's added its faux beef burger, called the McVegan, to menus in Sweden and Finland. "We're talking about millions of people dramatically changing their diets".
