Police also released this footage of Sergent Anthony Mannino stopping his patrol auto and running after the toddler on Route 59, before picking him up to comfort him. The 2-year-old boy is running south on Route 59 along the right lane, steps away from passing motorists in the center lane.

The boy was teetering in and out of a lane of traffic as cars and trucks rushed by, prompting the officer to shout and run after him, according to the dash-cam video.

"You're OK, you're OK", Mannino tells the boy once he finally catches up. Mannino then alerts dispatch that he has him and would begin searching for his parents.

An Illinois police sergeant is being hailed a hero after rescuing a young child who "escaped his mother's watchful eye".
