Lava destroys 600 homes on Hawaii's Big Island - mayor

Ash Eruption At Kilauea Summit Registered As 5.4 Earthquake

The lava that flowed into Kapoho Bay has created almost a mile of new land.

Many homeowners are unable to access their homes as the lava damaged the properties.

That's the volume of lava that's spewed out of the ground since eruptions on the Big Island started May 3.

At least 12,000 earthquakes on Hawaii's Big Island in the last 30 days.

Roughly a mile of new land formed after lava from Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano spilled into a nearby bay has some wondering who the new terrain belongs to. About 100 structures had been destroyed before the latest eruption, but about 500 homes in the communities of Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland were in the direct path of the lava. The rest of the losses have occurred in the Leilani Estates area, where the toll of destruction has been steadily rising by the day. "I'm talking about 600 families".

An eruption at Kilauea summit jolted the area with the force of a 5.4 magnitude natural disaster and hurled an ash plume that reached 10,000 feet above sea level.

An estimated 2,500 people have been displaced by evacuations across the island since the eruption began five weeks ago, spouting fountains of lava and high concentrations of toxic sulfur dioxide gas through about two dozen volcanic fissures at the foot of the volcano.

A report from the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaii Volcano Observatory said lava "continues unabated" from Fissure 8, near the most populated area, with lava shooting as high as 200 feet.

The lava's entry into the ocean was also producing laze - a hazardous mix of acidic steam, hydrochloric acid gas and tiny shards of volcanic glass.

It has also forced the shutdown of a geothermal energy plant that normally provides about a quarter of the island's electricity.
