Investors who want to rebrand and relaunch the political ad consulting firm are now trying to get the money back, and Nix has said he intends to repay part of the money.

The former head of Cambridge Analytica admitted on Wednesday his firm had received data from the researcher at the center of a scandal over Facebook users' personal details, contradicting previous testimony to lawmakers.

Cambridge Analytica has said its work on Donald Trump's presidential campaign did not use data at the center of the Facebook scandal, where the details of around 87 million users were allegedly improperly obtained.

The former chief executive of Cambridge Analytica, Alexander Nix, has described himself as a victim and blamed the liberal media for the downfall of his former employer.

According to a New York Times report published earlier this week, Facebook has reached data-sharing partnerships with at least 60 device-makers - including Apple, Amazon, BlackBerry, Microsoft and Samsung - during the last decade.

However, such reports raise uncomfortable questions about the assurances made by Facebook, the government said. He said that he had believed he had been asked whether Cambridge Analytica was now using GSR's data, rather than if it had ever done so.

The fake news enquiry kicked off in thorny fashion, as Nix refused to answer committee chair Damian Collins' opening question about the current state of Cambridge Analytica.

But he defended the now-defunct consultancy's reputation and said he felt victimised.

MPs asked Nix to return to face questions about inconsistencies in his evidence.

Reversing a statement given in February to British MPs, Mr Nix conceded that Cambridge Analytica did receive data from the researcher at the centre of the scandal. "All Mr Nix's comments carried in our reports were used in context, including any caveats", the broadcaster said in a statement.

He said that he was vindicated in saying Cambridge Analytica had not been involved in the Brexit campaign by a report by the Electoral Commission, and that whistleblower Christopher Wylie had lied about the consultancy's involvement in Brexit.

Nix also said he's embarrassed at having been caught on camera boasting that he could entrap political figures by compromising them with bribes and Ukrainian women. Nix also denied any knowledge of a meeting between the firm's employee and Julian Assange in the Ecuadorian embassy in 2017 which was reported by The Guardian.
