Kohli is shown to have a salary/winning of $4m and endorsements worth $20m.

Retired boxer Floyd Mayweather lived up to his "money" nickname, grabbing top spot thanks largely in part to the $275 million (R3 513 713 500, 00) he earned for just 36 minutes of work in his fight against Connor McGregor in August a year ago.

The latest list features athletes from 11 different sports, with basketball leading the way with 40 contenders.

The Forbes data reveals that the 100 highest-paid athletes earned a collective $3.8bn during the past 12 months - that's a 23 per cent increase from the previous year. Well Mayweather, Ronaldo and Tiger Woods are the only three athletes to top the best-paid list over the past 18 years. Footballers Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo came second and third respectively. Woods ranks 16th this year with $43.3m - and that is a pretty impressive figure when you consider that the 14-time major champion did not hit a golf shot in anger throughout the whole of 2017. Cristiano Ronaldo, who earns almost twice as much as Messi from endorsements, followed closely on the Barcelona stars earnings, with US$108 million.

McGregor was one spot behind Ronaldo, at $99 million. Almost all of his 2018 income came from a single 36-minute fight against UFC's Conor McGregor.
