US fighter jet crashes into sea off Japan - reports

A U.S. Air Force F-15 Eagle assigned to the 67th Fighter Squadron takes off during a training sortie

A US Air Force pilot is in "serious condition" Monday after a fighter jet crashed into the ocean south of Okinawa in southern Japan. The plane took off on a routine training mission.

The pilot was the only person in the aircraft at the time of the crash, but the cause remains unknown.

Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga also criticized the Japanese government, noting that a number of troubles with US military aircraft have been reported over the past year.

This accident has again raised questions about the safety of US military flights in the region, after a series of emergency landings and parts falling from USA military aircraft.

The incident marks the 12th crash involving United States military aircraft this fiscal year.

Later Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, "We have legitimized a brutal dictator who has starved his own people". He said he would discuss it "at great length" at an upcoming news conference, and indicated it would be made available publicly.

After Monday's incident, Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera once again called on the US military to ensure the safety of its aircraft and prevent future occurrences. "I will ask for detailed reports about why it happened".

The crash occurred around 6.40am local time on Monday about 50 miles off the coastal city of Naha, and the pilot was rescued after ejecting, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported.

Training operations with F-15 fighters will temporarily cease while operational, maintenance and safety procedures are reviewed, according to a statement from the base. "We will continue asking them to ensure safety", he said.

The U.S. Air Force is also considering replacing the F-15s, worth around $36 million each, with F-16 fighting falcons by 2020.

The U.S. has a heavy military presence in Okinawa that has been the source of friction with the local government and some residents.
