Eurosport experts on Nadal v Thiem: Who's going to win?

GETTYRafael Nadal has congratulated Marco Cecchinato for reaching the semi-finals

Rafael Nadal French Open

When he raised the envied arms after his 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 win, he had made the 24-year-old Austrian ranked No. 8 in the world, Dominic Thiem, his seventh different French Open final victim, counting Roger Federer four times and Novak Djokovic twice.

For the past two years, Thiem has been threatening to encroach on Nadal's territory. However, here a year ago in the semi-finals, Nadal destroyed Thiem, losing just seven games in a rout, but it is worth mentioning that Thiem triumphed in their last meeting in Madrid last month, in the quarter-finals.

The Spaniard also won the title without losing a set, becoming the third man to do so in the Open era after Ilie Nastase and Borg.

Nadal has not lost at Roland Garros when taking the first set and that record did not look like coming under threat as he continually rebuffed Thiem's attempts to make inroads into his serve, taking the second courtesy of an early break.

The number of consecutive sets won on clay by Nadal, breaking the previous record for most consecutive sets won on a single surface by McEnroe, who won 49 on carpet in 1984.

Up in the stands, Nadal's uncle Toni, his former coach, was nervous, too, "because I thought maybe we can have a problem", he said.

The Spaniard lifted his 17th major title at Roland Garros on Sunday, downing Dominic Thiem in his 11th victory in the French capital.

Only Rafael Nadal truly knows what he saw reflected when he glanced into the belly of the big silver bowl, but as he pressed his 11th French Open championship trophy against his cheek, his face began to crumple. The victory moves Nadal to 86-2 at the clay court slam. Nadal's level immediately cooled off a little, though, and Thiem worked his way back into the set as he broke back in the following service game.

Prepare to Survive the ‘Dark Times’ in Jedi: Fallen Order
There's plenty of uncharted territory, and focusing on a Jedi trying to survive on the run is quite the intriguing prospect. According to IGN.com, Respawn CEO Vince Zampella teased the brand new addition to the Star Wars gaming collection.

Whatever the issue was, Thiem could not earn the break back-giving up another one while serving down 4-2-and Nadal took the third set and the title.

"Tough moment", Nadal would say later.

Sunday marked the first time Nadal had faced a player from a younger tennis generation in a Grand Slam final.

"It's wonderful now, I can't describe my feelings", a sweat-soaked Nadal told the crowd.

Sunday's win was Nadal's 17th major trophy, only putting him three behind Roger Federer. After guzzling water during that break, Nadal felt better and was back to playing his unmistakable brand of almost unbeatable clay-court tennis. One of the hardest hitters of the tennis ball, Thiem, playing his maiden Slam final, more than held his ground. A forehand long. Just like that, Nadal was off on a five-game run that put him up 3-0 in the second set.

German six-time Grand Slam victor Boris Becker: The legend continues.

Thiem stayed with Nadal in the early going on a cloudy and steamy afternoon; the temperature was 24 degrees Celsius, the humidity approached 70 per cent.
