Lava from the Kilauea volcano destroyed hundreds of homes in a mostly rural area on the Big Island of Hawaii

Lava from Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano have created roughly a mile of new land.

Tensions have been running high over looting fears in Leilani Estates, where lava has been flowing since early May on Hawaii's Big Island.

Copernicus Sentinel-2 images from 23 May and 7 June 2018 show changes in lava flow from the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island.

An eruption at Kilauea summit jolted the area Wednesday with the force of a 5.4 magnitude quake and hurled an ash plume that reached 10,000 feet above sea level.

Kilauea is one of five volcanoes on the Big Island and is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, according to the ESA.

Mr Kim said it also marks Kilauea's most destructive episode in modern history.

With the rule change, schools can't prevent specific programs from contacting a transferring student-athlete. After two business days, opposing coaches are free to contact that athlete.

Hawaii county Mayor Harry Kim on Thursday said the homes were destroyed in three days at Vacationland and Kapoho Beach Lots in Pahoa, including the Mayor's own house in Vacationland, Xinhua news agency reported.

"Lava continues to enter the ocean along a broad front in Kapoho Bay and the Vacationland area and it continues to creep north of what remains of Kapoho Beach Lots", USGS geologist Janet Babb told Associated Press. Sitting above an active lava lake, the erupting Kilauea has now covered almost 8 square miles of land with molten rock, with ash plumes rising overhead to 30,000 feet high. "I'm talking about 600 families". A plume of toxic volcanic lava haze, called laze, stretched for miles.

US Geological Survey officials say the flow was still very active and there is no way of knowing when the eruption will end or whether more lava-spewing vents could open.

Thousands of residents have been left shell-shocked by the devastation that's been pounding the island.

In addition to destroying homes and other structures, lava flows have knocked out telephone and power lines, causing widespread communication outages, and forced the shutdown of a geothermal energy plant that normally provides about a quarter of the island's electricity.
