German Regulator Found Defeat Devices In Daimler Diesel Cars

Germany discovers ?illegal? devices that may be in 1M Mercedes diesels - Autoblog

The emissions scandal has hung over the German auto industry since September 2015, when Volkswagen admitted to using software that could tell when a diesel vehicle was being tested and temporarily lower its toxic emissions to pass USA regulations.

Well, as it turns out, the German Transport Ministry has ordered the tristar company to recall up to 774,000 cars across Europe after tests found that they each ran an unauthorised software that could be used to manipulate diesel exhaust emissions.

Mercedes is facing fresh scrutiny over its cars' emissions, after the German Federal Motor Transport Agency, or KBA, ordered parent company Daimler to recall 238,000 vehicles in Germany. The affected vehicle models are only sold in Europe and include the Mercedes-Benz Vito commercial van, C220d sedan, and GLC220d crossover SUV.

German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer summoned Zetsche after the KBA's discovery, even as Daimler disputes they were illegal.

The ministry statement did not say whether those cars outside of Germany would be recalled.

In January 2017, US regulators ordered a stop-sale of several Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' diesel-powered models, including its Jeep Grand Cherokee, after regulators said it emitted more nitrogen oxide than allowed by law.

That said, it has pledged to remove the software and to cooperate with authorities, the ministry said.

Tesla cutting 9 percent of its workforce to save costs
But Musk has promised an acceleration of Model 3 manufacturing, which will allow the company to bring in a lot more revenue. Tesla shares rose 2.5 percent to $340.34 in afternoon trading, after reaching as high as $354.97 around noon.

In a separate statement, Daimler confirmed the recall and said the question over the legality of the software would still need to be clarified.

KBA assumes the devices were meant to help a broad majority of Daimler's new diesel cars pass recently introduced Euro 6 emissions standards.

Thus far, Daimler continues to deny any legal wrongdoing when it comes to diesels and the automaker will avoid any fines stemming from this issue as long as it carries out the recall.

The reports allege that two engines (OM 642 and OM 651) come with devices that shut down emissions controls under certain situations.

'We don't see any evidence that Daimler was designing software to deliberately cheat on emission testing, ' he said.

Evercore ISI analyst Arndt Ellinghorst predicted the costs for the required software update for Daimler would be less than 100 million euros ($118 million).
