U.S. Navy contractor hacked by China government; plans for anti-ship missile stolen

WashPost: Chinese Hackers Steal Secret Navy Submarines Data

The hackers targeted the contractor who works for the Naval Undersea Warfare Centre - a military organisation headquartered in Rhode Island's Newport city - that conducts research and development for submarines and underwater weaponry, The Washington Post reported.

Among the data seized was also information on the US Navy's plans to mount a supersonic anti-ship missile on a submarine, The Post reported.

"The breaches occurred in January and February, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation", reports the Washington Post.

A commander of the US Navy, Bill Speaks, said that measures were in place requiring companies to notify the government when a "cyber incident" had occurred on networks that contained "controlled unclassified information".

The Post "agreed to withhold certain details about the compromised missile project at the request of the Navy, which argued that their release could harm national security".

However, he also said that it would be "inappropriate" to add any more details.

Gator sought after report of possible attack in Florida park
It is not uncommon for alligators to be removed from householders' swimming pools, but their attacks on people are rare. Despite the reptiles' widespread presence, only 22 people have died in alligator attacks in Florida since 1948.

Military experts said the breach signaled that China could be working to complicate the Navy's ability to defend USA allies in Asia amid a conflict with Beijing in the region. That includes stealing secrets from our defense contractors, ' said Talent. The initiative, which is shrouded in secrecy, was first launched in 2012.

The stolen data included secret information about a project known as Sea Dragon, as well as cryptographic systems and the Navy submarine development unit's electronic warfare library, the paper reported.

Naval experts fear that the build-up is created to undermine the US's ability to defend its allies in the region and suggests that most of the advancements made have come from cyber attacks mostly aimed at private contractors.

The officials said the material, when aggregated, could be considered classified, a fact that raises concerns about the Navy's ability to oversee contractors tasked with developing cutting-edge weapons.

The U.S. Navy and the FBI are investigating a massive hack attack on a Navy contractor, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin has confirmed.
