Several factors - including diet, family size and usage - influence the growth of pathogens on kitchen towels, the scientists said in a statement. Out of 100 towels collected for the study, the researchers found that 49 percent contained bacterial growth and the figure increased in the families that had more of members, presence of kids and increasing family size.

Their research discovered E. coli was more likely to be found on tea towels used for more than one job, including cleaning surfaces and wiping utensils, as well as drying hands.

Coliforms (Escherichia coli) was found to be higher in humid towels, multipurpose towels and in towels from families having non-vegetarian diets.

Of the 49 samples that were infested with bacteria, 37 percent had Escherichia coli (E. coli), 37 percent had Enterococcus, and 14 percent were infected with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus).

There's a decent chance your kitchen towels are hiding bacteria linked to food poisoning and other infections, according to a new study, though some are urging caution before tossing those towels in the trash.

Scientists carrying out the research grew cultures from bacteria found on tea towels to identify them and determine the bacteria load.

Findings from the study were scheduled for presentation Saturday at the American Society for Microbiology meeting, in Atlanta.

The virus is more likely to be present in damp towels or the ones which are used in households with non-vegetarian diets.

"In this study, we investigated the potential role of kitchen towels in cross-contamination in the kitchen and various factors affecting the microbial profile and load of kitchen towels", said lead author Susheela D. Biranjia-Hurdoyal, senior lecturer from the Department of Health Sciences at the university.

Ever wonder how much bacteria is growing on your kitchen towel?

S. aureus was isolated at a higher rate from families of lower socio-economic status and those with children.

"Humid towels and multipurpose usage of kitchen towels should be discouraged", Dr. Biranjia-Hurdoyal said.

Coliform bacteria and staphylococcus were found at a "significantly higher prevalence" on towels from meat-eating households.

If you wipe a floor spillage with a tea towel, the advice is to put that in the wash instead of then using it to dry cutlery. "The presence of Escherichia coli indicates possible fecal contamination and lack of hygiene practices (while handling non-vegetarian food)".

But Ms Moir warned that while paper towel could minimise the food poisoning risk, they are less environmentally friendly.
