Apple Bans Cryptocurrency Mining on iPhone and iPad

Apple Updates App Store Guidelines, Tightens Rules for Crypto-Related Apps

The latter has five subsections that further describe what apps can and cannot do in terms of cryptocurrency. No apps may mine crypto, unless they process that mining off the device, like in cloud-based mining. Initial offerings including futures investments, or other securities dealing with cryptocurrencies must be offered by an established bank, securities firm or exchange. "Apps, including any third party advertisements displayed within them, may not run unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining".

However, since Mac users can download third-party programs from outside the Mac App Store, it's likely that mining will still occur on that platform without Apple's blessing.

The ban is clearly spelled out in the new set of developer guidelines for the App Store released during Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which took place last week.

In sticking with the original mandate, only mainstream banks and similar financial institutions will be allowed to develop and publish apps enabling crypto futures trading and initial coin offerings, Apple said. The technology giant reversed its stance soon after, despite pulling moves like removing multi-cryptocurrency wallet Jaxx after its disapproval of Dash in 2016.

But what they did mention was their fascination with what we know of the first civilization and how it intertwines with mythology. In addition to a cinematic reveal trailer and some story details, Ubisoft also shared an extended look at gameplay on stage.

According to the new rules, Apple will no longer allow indie developers to publish any wallet app on the App Store as only developers affiliated with a registered organization are eligible.

Apple has a clear message for cryptocurrency enthusiasts: Don't mine it on our devices. Apps can help users make pay, trade, or receive cryptocurrency on an approved exchange, but the apps must be from the exchanges themselves.

Apple had pulled crypto-related apps from the App Store like Coinbase, citing an unresolved issue, though the apps later returned in 2017, following which for a time, Coinbase became the most downloaded app in the App Store.

Similarly, Apple is also allowing apps to facilitate crypto transactions "on an approved exchange, provided they are offered by the exchange itself".
