US blames Canada for G7 fiasco, says Trudeau 'stabbed us in the back'

The Latest: Merkel finds Trump's action sobering, depressing

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he has asked US representatives not to endorse the joint statement put out by the Group of Seven leaders after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's "false statements" at a news conference.

Trump was reacting to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said Saturday that Canada would retaliate for Trump's proposed new tariffs.

"Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!" the USA president tweeted.

Kudlow said Trump won't let a Canadian prime minister push him around on the eve of his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

-Canada border. Trudeau told reporters that imposing retaliatory measures "is not something I relish doing" but that he wouldn't hesitate to do so because "I will always protect Canadian workers and Canadian interests".

Trump has failed so far to get the steel and aluminum tariffs to pressure Canada and Mexico into revamping the North American Free Trade Agreement to better favor the United States.

The outburst against Trudeau, and by association the other G7 members, is only the latest incident in which Trump has clashed with America's closest allies, even as he has had warm words for autocrats like Kim and Russia's Vladimir Putin.

Nearly as an afterthought, Trump - now in Singapore for a summit with North Korean leader Kum Jong Un - tweeted: "Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!"

Although this video clip appears to be genuine, it does not show Justin Trudeau's eyebrows falling off his face.

What did Trudeau and Trump say?

But Trump had already said he would not hesitate to shut countries out of the United States market if they retaliate against his tariffs.

The president's acrimony raised the risk of a trade war that could spook financial markets, inflate prices of goods hit by tariffs, slow commerce, disrupt corporations that rely on global supply chains and jeopardize the healthiest expansion the world economy has enjoyed in a decade.

President Donald Trump told French President Emmanuel Macron that the European Union is worse than China on trade during a conversation that portended the tense end to this year's G7 summit.

Kudlow, in a separate TV appearance, said Trudeau was "polarizing" and "really kind of stabbed us in the back". "Very dishonest & weak", he tweeted.

Responding to Trump, Trudeau's spokesperson Cameron Ahmad said: 'We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the G7 summit'.

Trump's decision to withdraw his support for the communiqué has drawn sharp criticism from Germany on Sunday. Here's point #14 in its entirety, for example: "Recognizing that countries that are more equal are also more stable, more peaceful and more democratic, we are resolved to strengthen the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda. And I think that's what the prime minister did today", said Jaime Watt, a Toronto-based conservative political strategist. "We need to stand with our democratic allies". "Minimum is 17B. Tax Dairy from us at 270%", he wrote in the first of five tweets relating to the weekend's summit.

In a tweet Sunday, Collins said Maine's "special relationship" with Canada includes daily cross-border commutes for Canadian nurses who work in Maine.
