YouTube to launch music streaming service on 22 May

This means that if you are watching anything from a makeup tutorial, travel vlog, instructive videos, to comedy skits, and you like the song that's playing in the background, you can now access the song and see who created it. The new section titled "Music in this Video" can be found by clicking the "show more" button which drops down into a list of credits for the appropriate people, as well as links to the official artist channel and official music video when available. If a fan-made video, for example, matches with content within the database, the copyright owner will be consulted to decide whether the offending video will be blocked from the platform, track the video's viewership statistics, or share the revenue from ads with the uploader. YouTube reached a settlement in 2016 with the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) to pay royalties to songwriters. Second, the data comes from YouTube's partnerships with record labels, music publishers and music rights societies.

"YouTube is committed to providing recognition to all of the people who contribute to the creative process, and this is just the beginning", explained YouTube further. "We do have melody match tech that matches videos directly to musical compositions, but the quality of the metadata is still being improved. This will be an area for us to continue working with the industry and ultimately expand to covers etc".

Videos not only offer another side of the person making the music, but also of the music itself, adding in context clues and visual cues that enrich the sonic material. YouTube is now rolling out a new feature called "Music in this video" that will make it easier to figure it out.

Björn Ulvaeus of Abba noted, "The songwriter is every bit as important as the artist and deserves recognition".

YouTube follows in Spotify's footsteps-the streaming service added credits back in February.

In today's digital world, achieving accurate and comprehensive song credits is more attainable than ever.
