The Democratic Republic of Congo will begin a ring vaccination as the first batch of 4,000 experimental Ebola vaccines arrived on Wednesday to combat the outbreak of the disease in the country says World Health Organisation (WHO).

The upper chamber also urged the Minister of Interior to take necessary steps to check immigration.

The Senate urged Nigerians who travel to other African countries "to ensure the utmost level of care to avoid getting infected".

In an additional prayer by Chief Whip, Olusola Adeyeye, the Senate called for a quick resolution of the ongoing crisis in the health sector.

"As if that was not enough, upon his return to Nigeria, instead of summoning an emergency meeting of critical stakeholders to find solution to the problem, Mr. President abandoned the striking health workers and chose to organize and attend a political rally in Jigawa State".

The prayer was unanimously granted by the senators. With varying symptoms ranging from fever to diarrhoea, there was a total of 869 contacts and 20 laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded.

Said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general WHO "The Ministry of Health of DRC with support from WHO, Gavi and other partners are preparing to conduct vaccination of high-risk populations in affected areas". The Senate is further reminded that the DRC is 435 kilometres by air from Abuja and is easily accessible via a flight from Lagos that takes less than three hours.

World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said the vaccine will be reserved for people suspected of coming into contact with the disease, and that a second batch of 4,000 doses would be sent in the coming days.

"Over the weekend, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported seven more suspected cases of Ebola, raising the totals from April 4 through May 13 to 39 confirmed, suspected, and probable cases, including 19 deaths, for a case-fatality rate of 49 percent".

The lawmaker said that unless hospitals were prepared properly and equipped with Ebola vaccines, it would be an epidemic Nigeria might be unable to take on. "The Senate is further anxious that if we do nothing, given our population, we may well be on our way to creating a global situation".
