Volvo to eliminate diesel engines completely

Volvo V60 The Car Expert

Speaking at a Financial Times event on the future of transport, Hafan Samuelsson, Volvo's chief executive, said that "We're not saying diesel is more dirty, but it is more complicated and more expensive".

The S60 is set to be revealed next month and production for the saloon is set to start this autumn at Volvo Car's SC plant, which will be the only site to build the model. "We will phase out cars with only an internal combustion engine, with [gasoline] hybrid versions as a transitional option as we move towards full electrification".

Volvo will be revealing its new S60 sedan in a matter of weeks.

Volvo has confirmed that the next generation of the S60 premium saloon won't be fitted with a diesel engine of any kind.

The new S60 is confirmed to be initially available with a range of 4-cylinder Drive-E petrol engines as well as with two petrol plug-in hybrid versions. A mild hybrid option will launch next year. "The new S60 represents the next step in that commitment", he has said. The S60's estate sibling, the V60, was launched earlier this year in Stockholm.

It follows the automaker's announcement last July that every vehicle it launches from 2019 will feature some form of electrification, whether it be mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure electric power.

Production of the new S60 will start at Volvo's recently constructed plant outside of Charleston, South Carolina.

As well as market trends in Europe, the decision also reflects the key target market for the S60: the United States, where diesel accounts for a small percentage of sales. Samuelsson reiterated the company's commitment Wednesday with the announcement of the diesel death.

The carmaker is also hoping to have at least 50 per cent new auto sales by 2025 to be electric vehicles.
