US Fertility Rates Hit Record Lows... Again

The provisional number of births in the USA was 3,853,472 - down 2% from 2016, the largest 1-year decline since 2010 - with a provisional general fertility rate of 60.2 births per 1,000 among women ages 15-44 (down 3%), reported the CDC's Brady E. Hamilton, PhD, and colleagues.

But the drop could be the result of more women waiting longer to have children.

The number of U.S. births decreased in 2017, reaching a 30-year low, according to a report published online May 17 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.

General fertility rate for women age 15 to 44 was 60.2 births per 1,000 women-the lowest rate since the government started keeping records over 100 years ago.

The only age group that saw a rise in birth rates: Women in their early 40s.

The low birthweight rate (LBW) also increased in 2017 for the third straight year to 8.27 percent, from 8.17 percent in 2016.

The number of teens giving birth fell 7 percent in 2017, continuing a trend since the early 1990s.

Births for women in their 20s was down 4 percent; slightly down for women in their 30s; 2 percent down for women 30-34 and 1 percent for women 35-39. The researchers said that represents a 3 percent drop from 2016, and it's the biggest one-year decline seen since 2010.

However, the birth rate actually went up a bit for women aged 40 to 44, the report found.

This is the third year that the number of births has declined after an increase in 2014, and it's the lowest number of births since 1987.
