Hollywood mourns 'Lois Lane' Margot Kidder

Superman Star Margot Kidder Dies at 69

To a generation of both comic book fans and general moviegoers, Kidder's Lois Lane was the definitive Lois Lane, and we're sad to report that Kidder has passed away at the age of 69. Hatcher portrayed Lois' mother, while Kidder played Bridgette Crosby, the assistant to scientist Virgil Swann - portrayed by none other than her Superman co-star Christopher Reeve.

U.S. actress Margot Kidder, who played reporter Lois Lane in the "Superman" movies, has died at age 69, a statement from the funeral home handling her arrangements said Monday.

Erica Durance, who took on the same role in the WB series Smallville (starring Tom Welling as Clark), also posted a tribute to Kidder on Twitter, calling her "one kick ass lady" and adding, "You will be missed". "Nothing prepares anyone for that sudden thing of being world famous, it was such a shock", she said. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige called Lois Lane, and Superman's "You've got me?!"

Actor Mark Hamill said Kidder's legacy would "live forever".

Margaret Ruth Kidder was born in Canada and honed her acting skills on TV shows such as McQueen, Nichols, Banacek and Mod Squad before becoming a movie star. Off-screen she was one of the kindest, sweetest, most caring woman I've ever known. In addition to promoting mental health issues, she spoke publicly as an anti-war and environmental activist. In 2011 she was arrested while protesting against an oil pipeline at the White House. Margot was married three times, but sources claim she had been single since the late 1980s.

She told ABC's Barbara Walters in a 1996 interview that she had struggled for decades with mental illness, a fight that became public when she was found dazed and filthy in a yard not far from the studio where she once played Lane.

She had a daughter in 1976 with her first husband, novelist Thomas McGuane.

She reprised the part in sequels in 1980, 1983 and 1987, also.
