5-year-old son of fallen Terre Haute officer shares message for his dad

Five-year-old Dakota Pitts returned to school for the first time since his father's death in the line of duty.

But he didn't go back to his IN elementary school by himself on Monday as 70 of his father's coworkers were there IN uniform to escort him.

Last week, the young boy released a special message to his dad in hopes he will see it from heaven, and he also received an official police department badge.

"He will definitely know his dad was a hero", Jones said.

Les Hamm, a detective with the Terre Haute Police Department, said Dakota's mother reached out to family members and colleagues after her son asked for police to escort him to school.

When he arrived, the schoolboy was met with around 70 police officers who turned out to support him. "Blood doesn't always make family, and I think the blue family just went above and beyond".

The suspect opened fire from a second floor Terre Haute apartment building after he was approached by four investigators, police said.
