South Africa has withdrawn its ambassador to Israel after Israeli forces killed more than 50 Palestinians in the Gaza strip on Monday.

The Hamas-led riots, which have occurred every Friday for the past six weeks, are reaching their apex on May 14 and 15 as the United States opens its new embassy in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel.

Canada is committed the goal of a "comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East, including the creation of a Palestinian state living side-by-side in peace and security with Israel", Freeland said at the time.

The toll included a baby who died from tear gas inhalation along with eight children under the age of 16, the ministry said.

Burials are taking place of dozens of people (The Guardian) killed by Israeli forces.

"Jane Ferguson, a reporter for PBS Newshour, reported that the protesters are largely unarmed: "[Hamas knows] that as long as these protests are unarmed, they'll be potent and all the more politically useful.

The U.S. on Tuesday blocked the adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a probe into the violence that broke out on the Gaza border Monday.

But the highly controversial U.S. embassy opening in Jerusalem galvanised Palestinian demonstrators.

"We're aware of the reports of continued violence in Gaza today".

While both France and Britain called for restraint from Israel, the USA blamed Hamas for the violence, with White House spokesperson Raj Shah saying the Palestinian group "is intentionally and cynically provoking this response".

"Today is the big day when we will cross the fence and tell Israel and the world we will not accept being occupied forever", said Gaza science teacher Ali, who declined to give his last name.

Palestinians readied for their own protests yesterday over the embassy's inauguration, including another mass demonstration in the Gaza Strip near the Israeli border.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said while on a visit to London: "Israel is wreaking state terror".

In a statement on Monday night, the party also called for the expulsion of the Israeli mission "to our country as an example to the whole world that a relationship to Israel is complicity with its racist aggression on Palestinians".

Speaking later on Friday during a visit to the United Kingdom capital, London, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Israel of being a "terrorist state", saying it was commiting a "genocide" against Palestinians.

In Dublin, Ireland summoned Israel's ambassador to protest.

Shapiro said the Israelis acted with restraint, and that the media is portraying the them as killing civilians.

China called for restraint, "especially" from Israel.

Israeli forces deployed along the border responded to the peaceful protests with live ammunition, leaving scores of protesters dead and hundreds more injured. No Israeli casualties have been reported. Israeli troops say demonstrators are trying to breach the fence and defy a decade-old blockade on the region. Israel said its soldiers fired only at "targets of terrorist activity".

"Until then, no other country is allowed to move their embassy to Jerusalem and recognize it as the capital of Israel". The decision fueled unrest across the Middle East and has been condemned by the majority of the global community.

The White House, however, blamed the bloodiest day in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in years on Hamas.

But the move infuriated Palestinians, who seek the eastern part of the city that Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war as their future capital.
