By showing users how much time they spend on Instagram, the social networking service might risk prompting people to spend less time on the app.

The company plans to make it easier for users to understand their Instagram usage patterns.

Instagram is building a new tool that'll inform users how long they are spending aimlessly scrolling through feeds.

Earlier this week, app researcher Jane Manchun Wong discovered code buried in Instagram's Android app that revealed a never-before-seen "Usage Insights" feature.

The Facebook-owned app is working on a new "Usage Insights" feature, which will inform users the length of time they spend within the app. Understanding how time online impacts people is important, and it's the responsibility of all companies to be honest about this.

It is not immediately clear whether Instagram will show you the total time you have spent on the application till now or just break it down by shorter time frame like during the day, week or month.

Though it could potentially result in a decrease in usage, the feature would help users manage their time better, and perhaps help draw attention to any smartphone addiction issues going on.

If you've ever wondered how much time you spend flipping through photos on Instagram, then you're about to get a wake-up call.
