US retailer Gap apologizes to China over map on T-shirt that omits Taiwan, South China Sea

The offending shirt portrayed a map of China that didn't adhere to Beijing's territorial claims.

Gap has apologised for a T-shirt that featured a map of China without territories such as Taiwan.

The clothing brand, based in the USA, is the most recent worldwide business to be in trouble with the government of China over that country's territorial issues.

The government has lodged a protest against a change of its designation to "Taiwan, China" on the website of Air Canada, the country's flag carrier and largest airline, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday. "We've learned that a Gap brand T-shirt sold in some overseas markets failed to reflect the correct map of China", it said in a statement posted on its Weibo account on Monday evening.

Gap said in a statement it "sincerely apologized for this unintentional error" and has subsequently pulled the t-shirt from the Chinese market and destroyed it.

I can't imagine that, as a graphic designer for USA clothing giant Gap, you would have ever anticipated that part of your job would require officially apologising to the nation of China thanks to an worldwide upset you caused with one of your shitty shirt designs. In January, websites as well as apps for Marriott were blocked for more than week after the hospitality company listed Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Tibet as individual countries in both emails as well as apps.

The name change came in the wake of letters sent by China's Civil Aviation Administration in late April, pressuring 36 American and worldwide airlines to remove references to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as countries on their websites and marketing materials.

The White House hit back at the push earlier this month, calling the demands placed on airlines "Orwellian nonsense".
