2 Parents of Students Killed in Parkland Shooting Will Run for School Board

Parents of Parkland shooting victims run for school board

Lori Alhadeff and Ryan Petty's daughters, Alyssa Alhadeff and Alaina Petty, both 14 years old, were among the 17 students and staff killed in the Valentine's Day mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The parents said they also want to work toward more transparency and accountability in the district; Petty mentioned the "confusing matrix of discipline programs" that allowed the suspected school shooter to fall through the cracks despite warning signs of what was to come. Initially formed to address concerns with school security, the group started focusing on replacing School Board members after feeling the district wasn't responsive to their concerns, said John Daly Sr., who runs the group's Facebook page. Alhadeff's daughter, Alyssa, and Petty's daughter, Alaina, were among the 17 who died after Nikolas Cruz opened fire on February 14.

U.S. President Donald Trump also called Peterson a coward.

"We just need to fix the execution and implementation problems that plague the district", Petty said.

Alhadeff, 43 is running for the District 4 seat, which Abby Freedman, 51, now occupies. The mission of her foundation is to make schools across the country safe for all students and faculty so that similar tragedies will be prevented in the future.

A's Stephen Piscotty homers in first at-bat back from mom's funeral
Piscotty was away from the team for the past four games while tending to the loss of his mother from ALS. Is it dusty in here? It was his third home run of the season and put Oakland up 3-0.

"On Feb 14., when Alyssa was brutally murdered at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, I didn't want any parent to go through the anguish I went thorough or for any child to say, 'Mommy, am I going to die at school today?'" Alhadeff said.

Alhadeff is a former classroom teacher with a master's degree in education.

But she and Petty do not favor firing Runcie.

"If I get elected to the school board, I can be part of making sure the law gets implemented", Petty told Politico. "And the only way I'm going to do that is if I get on the school board to make those decisions and make those changes".
