Congress in Goa and Manipur RJD in Bihar say they'll stake claim to form government

The RJD has now asked the Governor to invite them to form the new government in the state.

In a ripple effect stemming from developments in Karnataka, the Congress in Goa, Manipur and Meghalaya and the RJD in Bihar, which is the single largest party in the respective states, Thursday said they will approach the state Governors and stake claim for government formation.

Now, as the BJP's past action boomerangs on itself and with the Congress going all out to consolidate its shrinking power-holds (the party is in power in Punjab and Puducehrry alone), all eyes are on the Supreme Court's verdict of Friday. "We are facing several issues". The Governor has given 12 noon time for the meeting with the Congress leaders. As of now and until the day of the floor test, as FC had reported earlier, the biggest challenge for the Congress-JDS is keeping their flocks together.

However, when a chance to form a new government arose in July 2017 when Nitish Kumar's JDU parted ways with the Grand Alliance, the RJD was not invited to form the government.

Congress Legislature Party chief Chandrakant Kavlekar said the party will stake claim tomorrow by submitting to Governor Mridula Sinha a formal letter containing signatures of all the 16 party MLAs.

In Manipur assembly elections, the Congress was three short of the majority mark with 28 seats in the 60-seat assembly. The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), Goa Forward Party (GFP) and independents won three seats each, whereas the Nationalist Congress Party picked up one. "His RJD was in fact in a pre poll tie-up, making his case stronger, in view of Karnataka model. We also request the Bihar Governor to dissolve the state government and like in Karnataka invite the single largest party, which in Bihar is the RJD", RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said.

The BJP has, however, dismissed the Congress' demand, as a result of frustration at being wiped out of the country's political map, with the State Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Sadanand Shet Tanavade even urging the Congress to bring its president Rahul Gandhi to Goa, to try and wrest the Government from the ruling BJP-led coalition alliance. The BJP joined hands with regional parties to claim support of majority of MLAs and governor Najma Heptulla invited the combine to form the government, ignoring the claim of the Congress.

Imphal correspondent adds: Former Congress chief minister of Manipur, O Ibobi Singh, Thursday said that his party would be staking claim before Governor Friday. Also, for the BJP to see is Siddharamaiah's one-man-centric vote-bank politics - one that the party paid a huge price for.

Meanwhile, Tejasvi Yadav also announced a protest dharna against the Karnataka Governor's decision. Support came from Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, Trinamul chief Mamta Banerjee, DMK leader Stalin, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, Akhilesh Yadav and Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena.

Sources in the Kerala BJP unit, closely associated with electioneering, said the Yeddyurappa factor was critical to their consolidation in Karnataka. "As an addendum to the Congress" valiant slug-out in the apex court, this is one tactical move to engage the main opponent, BJP, in another critical imbroglio.
