BMW Teases iNext EV

BMW Vision i teaser

BMW hopes to lead by example in structural reforms of the German automotive industry and will present an "iNext vision vehicle" in the course of the year.

At BMW's annual shareholders' meeting in Germany on Thursday the company released a teaser image of its future iNext electric auto. The company claims that the new flagship would incorporate all major strategic areas of innovation in a road-ready vehicle. Although no details were released, this description means, aside from an electric powertrain, that an autonomous system of some level would make it into production.

BMW is perhaps being a bit more circumspect than other premium auto makers when it comes to EVs and Autonomy, but it too is heading deep in to an electric future, and at their AGM yesterday Board Chairman Harald Kruger revealed an initial design concept for a new electric BMW iNEXT (above). The biggest battery is expected to be a 120-kilowatt-hour unit with over 400 miles of range. BMW iNEXT Concept will be fully electric, fully connected and highly automated vehicle.

Put that way, it makes this sort of an encouraging sign, provided the streaming service really is just rushing to collect trophies with this move.

BMW offered a glimpse of its futuristic self-driving iNext vehicle as the automaker seeks to gain momentum in the race to overtake rival Mercedes-Benz in luxury sales. That means an electric auto with a high degree of autonomy.

This is BMW's preview of the iNext, an all-electric, Internet-enabled, semi-autonomous vehicle that will be produced at BMW's Dingolfing plant in 2021. Instead it will come with Level 3 capability that demands the driver monitor progress and be ready to takeover, if required.

The iNext will be one of 12 electric cars that the BMW Group will launch by the end of 2025. The first of these will be an electric Mini Hardtop due in 2019. It will be followed by an iX3 in 2020, and then the iNext in 2021.
