Could North Carolina be site of new Apple campus?

Tim Cook Duke

He said North Carolina has been working for the past eight years to create incentives, a talent pool and a business climate that attracts companies like Apple.

However, a fresh report today from WRAL claims that Research Triangle Park is "a done deal" if the state agrees to tax incentives for Apple.

This would be well worth it, North Carolina believes, as Apple would be investing somewhere between $1.5 billion and $2 billion in the state, and would bring jobs that pay an average of $130,000 a year. One government source said this is "by far the biggest project this state's ever seen as far as average salaries ..." Apple may be offering conservative estimates for regulatory reasons, or could be considering different uses of multiple locations.

Apple already has a data center in North Carolina.

North Carolina was first tipped as a possible location for the new Apple campus on Tuesday.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was in the region to give a commencement speech at Duke on Sunday and has met with Gov. Roy Cooper, WRAL reported. The Washington Post also reported that Virginia officials had pitched Apple. The company announced in January that it planned to establish a second headquarters, away from its Cupertino, California, base, employing up to an additional 10,000 people wherever it chose to plant roots.

"We're not doing a beauty-contest kind of thing", Cook told Recode's Kara Swisher in a recent interview. Apple expects to hire 20,000 employees over the next five years in those three locations. The Loudoun County land, consisting of 85 acres outside the Innovation Center Metro station now under construction, is owned by a partnership managed by Mark Masinter, a Dallas retail expert whom Steve Jobs hired in 2000 to help Apple open its first stores.

North Carolina Speaker of the House Tim Moore did not respond to a request for comment. Where Amazon has been overt with its plans, leading to many public subsidy offers from states, and some protests from local residents, Apple is being far more secretive and has only promised to announce new plans for its future investment in USA facilities later this year. The new campuses will not be anything like the previous ones.
