Hundreds of Syrians are demonstrating in a landmark square of the Syrian capital, waving victory signs and honking their auto horns in a show of defiance.

"A perfectly executed strike", Trump tweeted on Saturday after US, French and British warplanes and ships launched more than 100 missiles almost unopposed by Syrian air defences.

Trump did not detail what a strike on Syria would look like, or whether these would be US missiles.

Assad vowed Friday to respond to the attack, tweeting, according to translations, that "Good souls will not be humiliated".

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday night that the three allies had launched military strikes to punish Syrian Assad for alleged chemical weapons use and to prevent him from doing it again.

"The mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has set off to Syria not so quickly and without abundant enthusiasm but under our and Syrian pressure". The medics said none of the patients were hurt by chemicals.

Although Mattis noted that military action carried risks, he also emphasized that Syrian use of chemical weapons should not be tolerated.

A US -led attack on Syria will be seen as limited if it is now over and there is no second round of strikes, said a senior official in the regional alliance that has supported President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian war. The network says the building in the research centre included an educational centre and labs.

Syrian media reported that air defences had hit 13 incoming rockets south of Damascus.

At about sunrise, the sound of explosions could be heard just as the loudspeakers from the city's mosques called for morning prayers.

Earlier this month Mr Trump reportedly told Pentagon officials that he wanted to end the USA involvement in Syria.

Syrian TV called the attacks a "blatant violation of worldwide law and shows contempt for global legitimacy".

Netanyahu voices support for attack in Syria
A spokesperson for the USA embassy confirmed that Israel was informed of the action ahead of time. The coalition strikes reportedly caused heavy damage to Syria's chemical weapons infrastructure.

Mr Konashenkov said that Russian Federation knew "for sure" that between April 3 and April 6, the White Helmets - a group which helps civilians in opposition-held territory in Syria - were "under severe pressure specifically from London to produce as quickly as possible this pre-planned provocation".

"Right now this is a one-time shot", he said but did not rule out further attacks.

Mr Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow's ambassador to the United Nations, said he "cannot exclude" war between the U.S. and Russian Federation.

In a televised briefing on Friday, Russia's Ministry of Defence repeated the Kremlin's stance that the attack was faked, adding that it had proof that Britain participated in its staging.

Following the USA -led strikes, however, "we consider it possible to return to examination of this issue not only in regard to Syria but to other countries as well", Rudskoi said. "But on this occasion there is none", May said.

In a televised address from the White House, Trump said he had ordered US armed forces to launch "precision strikes" associated with Assad's chemical weapons capabilities.

This was playing with fire after Russia - Syria's strongest ally - had warned that a missile attack would be met with force by Moscow, raising fears of a straight fight between the USA and Russia. He called on Moscow to change course and join the West in seeking a more responsible regime in Damascus.

"Even non-significant incidents would lead to new waves of migrants to Europe and to other consequences, which neither we nor our European neighbours need", Lavrov said. "All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris".

The strikes come after a suspected chemical weapons attack in the former rebel stronghold of Douma last weekend.

The statements came as the USA, United Kingdom and France reportedly consider responses to the attack, which Westerm leaders believe was ordered by the Syrian government. The United States and allies struck Syria Friday night and Russian Federation has promised that the attack will come with consequences.

Sheikh Naim Qassem, deputy leader of the Iranian-backed Hizbollah, told Lebanese daily Al-Joumhouria: "The conditions do not point to a total war happening. unless Mr Trump and (Israeli leader) Benjamin Netanyahu completely lose their minds". In the past 12 days alone, 12,000 people left the city, Syria's state news agency said. "As other nations step up their contributions, we look forward to the day when we can bring our warriors home".

Asked whether the USA military was ready to conduct an attack in Syria if ordered, Mattis replied, "We stand ready to provide military options if they're appropriate, as the president determined". They are in eastern Syria, far from Damascus. Iran insists its soldiers are only in Syria in an advisory role, but hundreds have been killed since the civil war began in 2011.
