Syria: 'Chemical attack' and international threats – Here's recap of events since April 7

Syrian President Bashar al Assad on Thursday warned that threats of Western military action in response to an alleged chemical attack would only lead to further chaos in the region

May recalled the ministers from their Easter holiday for a special cabinet meeting in Downing Street later on Thursday to discuss Britain's response to what she has cast as a barbaric attack that can not go unchallenged.

The Iranian nuclear deal, formerly known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was struck in 2015 between Iran and China, the U.S., U.K., Russia, France and Germany.

In the call, the two leaders had agreed that the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "had established a pattern of risky behaviour in relation to the use of chemical weapons", Downing Street said.

Trump discussed the Syria situation with his national security team at the White House on Thursday.

Asked about consulting the U.S, which has also threatened military action, Le Drian said "France is autonomous in taking its decisions".

Defence Secretary Jim Mattis warned such an attack carried the risk of spinning out of control, suggesting caution ahead of a decision on how to respond to an attack against civilians last weekend that USA officials are increasingly certain involved the use of banned chemical weapons.

British Prime Minister Theresa May was due to hold an emergency cabinet meeting amid speculation she will support USA action against the Syrian regime.

France's Emmanuel Macron said Thursday he had "proof" that the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had used chemical weapons, and would respond to it "in due course".

In France, President Emmanuel Macron is expected to clarify his position later on Thursday in a television interview -- only his third since taking office previous year.

Assad's main ally Russian Federation has repeatedly issued warnings to the USA that it will shoot back at missiles, warships and jets if they strike against Syria, bringing the United States and Russian Federation into direct conflict for the first time. The Lebanese carrier Middle East Airlines has temporarily halted all flights over Syrian airspace, and Kuwait Airlines is suspending all flights landing in Beirut's Rafik Hariri Airport.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper said May had ordered British submarines to move within missile range of Syria in readiness for strikes against the Syrian military.

Britain continues to support the US-led coalition targeting IS jihadists in Iraq and Syria, and has conducted more than 1,700 strikes.

The U.S., France and Britain have been in extensive consultations about launching a military strike as early as the end of this week, U.S. officials have said.

Twenty-one percent of the respondents said they did not know if it was necessary to hold a parliamentary vote on whether London should engage in the military actions against Syria.

After Ms. May met with her Cabinet, a spokesperson issued a statement saying it is highly likely that Syria's President Bashar Assad was responsible for Saturday's attack that killed dozens outside Damascus.

There was no immediate confirmation or indication from Assad's government that Syrian troops entered Douma on Thursday.
