Former Himachal Pradesh governor V S Kokje was today elected the VHP's global president.
The election and removal of Togadia from the position of VHP worldwide president reportedly took place due to RSS's discomfort with Togadia using the banner of the organisation to accuse Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government of betraying the Hindutva cause.
The president of the VHP, which had been at the forefront of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the 1990s, nominates the global working president, the de facto head of the organisation.
State VHP leaders, however, refrained form expressing their stand on Togadia's proposed fast. But Reddy lost the election to Kokje who won 131 out of the 192 total votes in the election that was held in Gurgaon. Togadia who has been criticized by the BJP faced a lot of opposition within the VHP in recent times.
Mr. Kokje had been the Governor of Himachal Pradesh from 2003 to 2008.
