Russia Syria chemical attack ‘fabrication’ by foreign power

Russia's foreign ministry said today that Western strikes on Syria came as the country had "a chance of a peaceful future." the Russian government's response came after U.S., United Kingdom and France launched precision strikes on Syrian chemical research and storage facilities in the capital city of Damascus.

Russian Federation said that the Western powers "cynically" carried out military action hours before a team from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was set to begin an investigation into the suspected chemical weapons attack in the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta that sparked the intervention by the United States and its allies.

There was no word from Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, though his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, said Moscow was in contact with Washington to discuss an atmosphere which he described as alarming.

"The sole thing that they have an interest in is to oust the Syrian government and to deter, contain the Russian Federation", he added. US Ambassador Nikki Haley told the council "there is clear information demonstrating Assad's culpability". The ministry additionally pointed to previous alleged use of chemicals by the rebels in fighting with Syrian government troops.

"I hope no one would dare to launch such an adventure now", Lavrov said.

But Nebenzia said the goal was to oust President Bashar al-Assad from power. Military analysts told NBC News the strikes didn't alter the course of Syria's civil war.

He noted that the Russian and US militaries have a hotline to prevent incidents, adding that it's not clear if it would be sufficient amid mounting tensions.

A fact-finding mission from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is expected to arrive in Douma on Saturday.

The U.S. also concluded that Russian Federation had advance knowledge of the attack based on the information that a drone was flying over a hospital where the victims of the 2017 attack were being taken to get treatment.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that missiles "will be coming" in response to the toxic gas assault on April 7 that killed dozens of people in Douma, a town near Damascus which had been held by rebels until this month.
