US, UK France launch 'precision' air strikes on Syria in wake of chemical weapons attack

Syria’s capital has been rocked by loud explosions that lit up the sky with heavy smoke as U.S. President Donald Trump announce

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad praised Russian weaponry on Sunday as his government celebrated victory over rebels in the town where an alleged chemical attack took place, triggering US airstrikes over the weekend.

Much like US statements, Britain's foreign secretary Boris Johnson said there are no plans to launch additional military strikes against Syria, but that his country and its allies will consider further action if Assad uses chemical weapons against his people in the future.

In his national address an hour prior to the Pentagon press conference, President Trump condemned Russian Federation and Iran for backing the Assad regime and demanded the two nations withdraw their support for Syria's "barbarism and brutality".

The UK, France and the USA are pushing for an independent investigation into allegations that Syrian Government forces are using chemical weapons - a day after launching air strikes on the war-torn country.

The president was in a "good mood" and continuing his work in Damascus, agencies cited the lawmakers as saying, and praised the Soviet-era air defence systems Syria used to help to repel the Western attacks.

He said the missiles used by the Western nations were delivered from British, French and USA air and naval platforms in the Red Sea, the Northern Arabian Gulf and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Looking ahead, France's UN ambassador Francois Delattre said France, Britain and the United States would soon be presenting the Security Council with a new draft resolution aimed at achieving a lasting solution to the Syrian conflict that addresses political, chemical and humanitarian issues.

President Donald Trump "enforces" the red line and the USA will sustain the pressure on the war-torn nation, she said.

"This is going to set the Syrian chemical weapons program back for years", McKenzie said in a press briefing.

"And should he use it again, the president has made it very clear that the United States is locked and loaded and ready to go". In addition, the draft resolution proposes conducting independent investigations into reported chemical attacks in Syria.

"This is something we can not accept, the use of chemical weapons on civilians", he said, "and the worldwide community needs to continue to stand extremely strongly as we continue to hold Syria accountable".

In a news conference that took place on Saturday morning Pentagon Chief officials said they can't speculate on what will happen next.

US officials have said the strikes hit three chemical-weapons facilities, including one in Damascus and two in Homs. "We can't allow even the smallest use of chemical weapons".

The air strikes were in response to the suspected chemical attack that left dozens dead last weekend in Douma.

The measure would instruct the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to report within 30 days on whether Syria has fully disclosed its chemical weapons stockpile. Macron spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, hours before the Western missile strikes.

Satellite images from those companies appear to show extensive airstrike damage to facilities allegedly involved with Syria's chemical weapons program, CNN said. They conducted bombing attacks against targets at three sites, including a chemical weapons research facility on the outskirts of the capital of Damascus and a chemical weapons storage facility in the central province of Homs.

- Syrian state TV called the attacks a "blatant violation of worldwide law and shows contempt for global legitimacy".
