Niko Kovac has agreed to replace Jupp Heynckes as Bayern Munich manager next season

Speaking about Bayern's search for a coach following Saturday's 5-1 rout of Borussia Monchengladbach, Hoeness told reporters: "It was portrayed as having a desperate search".

The club's resurgence has continued this term with Kovac's men fifth in the Bundesliga, just two points behind Bayer Leverkusen, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.

But, there is the risk that their final weeks of the season could see a downturn in form as Kovac's mind begins to shift towards Bayern - who Frankfurt could go up against in the DFB-Pokal final should they win their respective semi-finals. "We acted very professionally because we took advantage of a loophole in Niko Kovac's contract - which he had inserted himself".

"But we made a decision to let them know as soon as possible, now they have more time to get a new coach", Hoeness added.

The new manager, born in Berlin to Croatian parents, is under contract to Frankfurt until 2019 and reports in the German media have suggested his release clause is €2.2m (£1.9m).

At a news conference later Friday, the older Kovac said he had mixed feelings about leaving Frankfurt, but "not many coaches, not many players" get an opportunity at Bayern.

Several high-profile coaches, including Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, were linked with the Bayern job after Heynckes reportedly rejected the offer of a contract extension.

Hoeness was particularly angered by suggestions that Bayern intentionally leaked the news of Kovac's appointment to the press. The 44-year-old Robert Kovac also previously played for the club.

"We view Fredi Bobic's statement as rather outrageous", Hoeness said. "We deliberately told Frankfurt as early as possible so they can get a successor". The top four teams qualify for next season's Champions League group stage.

Kovac was appointed at Eintracht in March 2016 and helped the club survive a relegation play-off that season before guiding them to a respectable 11th-place finish in 2017.

Outgoing coach Jupp Heynckes warned the rest of the Bundesliga that the champions will not let up in their efforts during the rest of the season. Bayern's loss is Hoffenheim's gain, however, as the young coach can continue to build his team to climb the Bundesliga table.
