R. Lee Ermey, star of 'Full Metal Jacket', has died

Ermey's long-time manager Bill Rogin shared the sad news on Twitter.

According to a statement that his manager posted on Facebook, Ermey died from complications from pneumonia.

It was Ermey's military experience and persona that landed him dozens of authority-figure roles over a almost 40-year film and television acting career.

"It's with deep disappointment that I remorse to tell you all that R. Lee Ermey ("The Gunny") handed away this morning from problems of pneumonia", Mr Rogin tweeted. Ermey, a retired U.S. Marine and an honorary gunnery sergeant, served as a drill instructor during his tenure in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Ermey also lent his voice as the plastic toy soldiers' leader in Toy Story. His full name was Ronald Lee Ermey.

Ermey is survived by his wife Nila of more than 40 years.

Ermey was born March 24, 1944, in Emporia, Kansas, and moved with his family to Toppenish, Washington, when he was 14, where he became a "troublemaker and a bit of a hell-raiser", according to the Civilian Marksmanship Program's online magazine.
