Assad said the strike would increase Syria's resolve to "fight and crush terrorism in every inch" of the country.

The U.S., Britain and France said they launched airstrikes against Syrian chemical sites after obtaining evidence that poisonous gas was used last weekend on the Damascus suburb of Douma by President Bashar Assad's government.

Syrian state media accused Western powers of trying to hinder the investigation with their attack.

A pair of White House readouts indicated President Trump spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Theresa May Saturday about Friday's operations. The U.S. and other Western powers have blamed the suspected gas attack on Syrian President Bashar Assad, who is backed by Russian Federation and Iran.

Numerous protesters FOX40 spoke with say, the chemical attacks remind them too much of alleged "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq in 2003.

Some protesters like David Mandel liken US involvement in Syria to the Iraq and Vietnam wars.

KHQ will continue to update this list as statements from other officials are sent into the newsroom.

"A perfectly executed strike", Trump said on Twitter, even as top Pentagon officials said they still were assessing the damage. That attack, [Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White says], hit a Syrian military air base and was meant to focus on Syria's ability to deliver chemical weapons.

USA envoy Haley also said that if Trump draws the red line, he enforces it and the U.S. will continue to sustain pressure on Syria.

The United Nations Security Council rejected a Russian resolution that would condemn "aggression" by the US and its allies against Syria on Saturday. "So there is no practicable alternative to the use of force to degrade and deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Regime".

One site hit by the barrage of missiles was the Bazrah Research Center, a scientific research center on the outskirts of Damascus.

Haley said the USA successfully hit the heart of Syria's chemical weapons enterprise, and because of these actions, it is confident that it has crippled Syria's chemical weapons programme. The strikes didn't hit any of the Syrian Air Force units that drop chemical weapons routinely.

"We urge responsible nations to condemn the Assad regime and to join us in our firm resolve to prevent chemical weapons from being used again", Mattis said.

In short, Assad should have nothing to fear from using chemical weapons again.

The Pentagon says Syria launched 40 surface-to-air missiles in response to the coalition attack. "This is not about intervening in a civil war".
