NASA goes in search of aliens

NASA satellite to search for habitable planets - | WBTV Charlotte

The launch window is narrow, so if it closes before SpaceX can get its cargo off the ground, a 30-second backup window is set for Tuesday, April 17 at 6:13pm ET.

The launch of Nasa's Tess planet-hunter has been postponed and it will not now lift off until Wednesday at the earliest.

NASA's powerful, planet-hunting satellite TESS was supposed to launch into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 on Monday, but plans were nixed at the last moment due to unspecified complications.

The Launch team of the TESS is standing down in order to run a test involving the guidance navigation system and control analysis of the rocket.

NASA and SpaceX officials scrubbed Monday's planned TESS launch. NASA stated that spacecraft will fly in a unique orbit that will allow it to study almost the entire sky over two years. These mysterious worlds beyond our solar system, called exoplanets, could harbor life.

And don't miss our in-depth coverage of TESS, how the telescope works, and why the mission could lead to groundbreaking discoveries in the search for habitable planets.

The satellite's goal is to extend the successful mission of the Kepler Space Telescope by observing stars and monitoring them for temporary drops in brightness caused by planetary transits.

Last-minute delays for testing are not unusual for rocket launches.

TESS is slated to complete a two-year survey of the "solar neighborhood", a general region which comprises more than 200,000 of the brightest nearby stars.

"We might even find planets that orbit stars that we can even see with the naked eye", she added. Using the known planet size, orbit and mass, TESS and ground-based follow-up will be able to determine the planets' compositions.

The satellite known as Tess will survey nearly the entire sky, staring at the brightest, closest stars in an effort to find any planets that might be encircling them.

Life might be out there, whether microbial or more advanced, and scientists say Tess and later missions will help answer the age-old question of whether we're alone.

"TESS is going to dramatically increase the number of planets that we have to study", said Ricker. This allows for newly detected planets and their atmospheres to be characterized more easily.

"How regular is a planet like Earth around a star like the Sun?" said Patricia "Padi" Boyd, chief of the TESS visitor specialist program at NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center. Repeated dips would indicate a planet passing in front of its star. Kepler stared at 250,000 distant stars in a cross-shaped area equal to 0.25 percent of the sky, and identified the signatures of more than 5,000 confirmed planets and candidates. "It's like we're making a treasure map", Guerrero said.
