The prize in that category has so far only been given to classical or jazz musicians.

US rapper Kendrick Lamar has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize in Music for his critically acclaimed album "DAMN".

"It means that the jury and its board judging system worked as it's supposed to - the best work was awarded a Pulitzer Prize".

Lamar has been praised and lauded for his deep lyrical content, remarkable live performances, and his profound mix of hip-hop, spoken word, jazz, soul, funk, poetry and African sounds.

In 2004, then Pulitzer administrator Sig Gissler said they would be "broadening the prize a bit". The album topped the Billboard 200 album charts and bagged five wins at the Grammy Awards in 2018.

DAMN features artists like Rihanna and U2 and explores some of the themes of his highly-acclaimed 2015 album To Pimp A Butterfly - which features the track Alright, a song that became a war cry for the Black Lives Matter movement. As a victor for the Music category, K-Dot walks away with a certificate and $15,000, champ change for the artist who is worth over $18M.

Organisers said it offered "affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life".

Thanks to the success of the album, Lamar was able to win several awards, including Album of the Year at the 2017 Bet Hip-Hop Awards and Hip-Hop Album of the Year at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards.

The Washington Post received the Pulitzer Prize in Investigative Reporting for its reporting about U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore.
