Kentucky gov. says "I guarantee" child was sexually assaulted during teacher protests

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin speaks at a joint session of the Kentucky legislature during the State of the Commonwealth address in Frankfort Ky

In a rare off-the-cuff interview with reporters in Frankfort on Friday evening, Gov. Matt Bevin (R-Kentucky) said teachers who called in sick to protest put children's lives in danger.

"It's my responsibility to represent you, not only when I'm speaking to you, but when I'm speaking on your behalf in ways that are clear, that are understood, that don't hurt people and don't confuse people", he said.

Bevin apologized several times in Sunday's video and said many people misunderstood and "did not fully appreciate" his earlier statement.

Teachers got the blame, as Bevin said some single parents can not afford childcare and can not afford to take time off work to watch their children.

"I don't agree with these comments & I find them repulsive", Wise said Friday on Twitter.

"I apologize for those who have been hurt by the things that were said", Bevin said in a video statement.

His comments came shortly after Republican lawmakers voted to override his vetoes of a two-year operating budget that included increased spending for public education with the help of an accompanying $480 million tax increase.

Strikes hit Syria as country had 'chance for peaceful future': Moscow
The Russian defence ministry and the Kremlin have yet to make any comment on the strikes announced by US President Donald Trump. Ambassador Anatoly Antonov's statement promised that tonight's bombardment would not go unaswered.

Governor Bevin voiced his frustrations for what he believes is a disregard for what is best for children.

'I guarantee you somewhere today, a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were left alone because a single parent didn't have any money to take care of them'.

Teachers from across Kentucky gathered in the state Capitol to rally for increased funding for education on Friday. The extraordinary rebuke came on the final day of the legislative session Saturday. Our prevention training efforts have reached more than 3,000 Kentuckians.

Matt Bevin issued an apology Sunday for remarks he made Friday that suggested a state-wide teachers' strike left schoolchildren vulnerable to harm, sexual assault and drugs, saying his remarks had "unintended consequences".

There were at least 44 school districts that closed because teachers called in sick to attend the rally. "If we want to create a world without child abuse, we can not tolerate the governor's comments". "The Kentucky Senate Democratic Caucus condemns these types of demeaning and degrading statements directed at our teachers and public employees by the Governor".

Mary Nishimuta, executive director of the Kentucky Democratic Party, called the comments "inappropriate and perverse".
