Bill Cosby's lawyers say accuser Andrea Constand is a 'con artist'

Andrea Constand Testifies Agreeing to $3.38M Settlement With Cosby Because She 'Just Wanted It Over'

Prosecutors in Pennsylvania have been now retrying Cosby on fees he drugged and mistreated 4 5, Andrea Constand, in his suburban Philadelphia home in 2014.

The victim's mother's testimony was pivotal in last year's criminal trial of Cosby.

As she got up, Cosby told her that there was a muffin and tea on the table, Constand testified. He said he was given seven prescriptions for the now-banned sedative, ostensibly for a sore back.

Mesereau hasn't set off many of fireworks yet, but in more than two hours of cross examination on Friday the veteran trial lawyer had Constand flustered with questions about whether she'd ever said she was affectionate toward Cosby, and a line of attack centred on her involvement in a Ponzi scheme.

"Quaaludes happen to be the drug that kids, young people were using to party with and there were times when I wanted to have them just in case", Cosby testified.

At the retrial, Cosby's new lawyer, Tom Mesereau, has called Constand a "con artist" who baited Cosby by feigning romantic interest in him and wound up with a $3.4 million civil settlement after she levelled a false claim of sexual molestation.

Prosecutors are building to the conclusion of their case against Cosby with investigators and a pharmaceutical expert expected to take the stand beginning Tuesday in the comedian's sexual assault retrial.

Several other women told jurors last week they believe Cosby drugged and molested them.

The 80-year-old comedian walked through heavy rain into the suburban Philadelphia courthouse under a large black umbrella held by his spokesman.

Constand said prior to the alleged assault, she had considered Cosby a mentor from whom she sought career advice.

The payout settled a civil lawsuit that Constand filed after Pennsylvania prosecutors in 2005 initially declined to charge Cosby for the alleged assault.

The defense lawyer then asked, "Did you ever fabricate a scheme to falsely accuse him for money?"

Constand met Cosby at a basketball game in 2002 at Temple University, where she was an employee.

Prosecutors on Monday delivered a one-two punch as chief accuser Andrea Constand rejected defense allegations that she concocted her story to score a big payday, and her mother testified that Cosby apologized.

"I gave my best recollection of the evening", Constand replied. "This isn't about money".

Cosby is charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault for the alleged sex attack, and faces up to 10 years behind bars on each count.

Her mother Gianna Constand also took the stand on Monday, when she told the court that her daughter was "not the same" when she returned to Canada from the United States in the wake of her alleged assault.

Andrea Constand is just one of about 50 ladies that have accused Cosby of assaults dating back to years, accusations he denies. She said she awoke to find the actor known as "America's Dad" penetrating her with his fingers, touching her breast and putting her hand on his penis. "My eyes were like two pools of blood", Gianna Constand said. He also questioned her about her various phone calls to Cosby in the days after she was assaulted and laid special stress on the fact she called Cosby twice on Valentine's Day. Her testimony prompted Cosby, sitting with his lawyers at the defence table, to open his eyes wide.

The prior television star's first trial ended with the jury unable to reach a verdict.

The judge has ruled that Jackson can take the stand at the retrial but indicated he could revisit the issue after Constand was finished testifying.

When asked about the $3 million settlement between her daughter and Cosby, Gianna Constand said she did not know how much money was involved until she read about it in a newspaper.

"Did you think it was appropriate to be in a married man's room at the time?" he asked her once about her going to visit Cosby for advice.

The defence plans to call as a witness a former Temple administrator, Marguerite Jackson, to testify that before Constand lodged her allegations against Cosby in 2005, Constand had mused to her about setting up a "high-profile person" and filing suit. During cross-examination, Constand struggled to remember why she'd sent them but said she was only trying to help out a friend.

"I might have been mistaken", Ms Constand replied.
