The militancy was quelled in the early 1990s.

Shah was called in to register India's objection to Pakistan making inflammatory remarks and displaying posters with such messages at places where the pilgrims visited.

Faisal said the Secretary of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) had extended an invitation to the High Commissioner of India to attend the main function of Baisakhi at the Gurdwara Panja Sahib on April 14 and the foreign ministry granted the travel permission to him. Islamabad was told to stop all activities aimed at undermining India's territorial integrity and to stop extending support to secessionist movements in India.

To run Pakistan's anti-India propaganda, the Sikh militants also placed posters of Sikh Referendum 2020 in Parikarma of Gurudwara Panja Sahib, the holy Sikh shrine.

Pakistan's deputy high commissioner Syed Haider Shah on Tuesday said their government is considering the Indian authorities' request to develop a religious corridor between Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur and Kartarpur Sahib in the neighbouring country.

It may be recalled that Pakistani security agencies including the notorious ISI have always been under the scanner for their role in trying to get pro-Khalistan elements in Europe and North America to instigate Indian Sikh pilgrims who visit Pakistan. But observers note that Pakistan has not given up its plans of trying to reignite the movement through pro-Khalistan elements based overseas.

India today summoned Pakistan's Deputy High Commissioner here and lodged a strong protest over attempts being made to raise the Khalistan issue during the visit of Sikh pilgrims to that country.

It had said the Indian High Commissioner, who was to greet Indian pilgrims on the occasion of Baisakhi, was compelled to return when he was en route to Gurdwara Panja Sahib. The Indian Foreign Ministry urged Pakistan to put an immediate end to those actions that seek to undermine sovereignty, territorial integrity and to cause disruption in India. Islamabad had however denied the allegations and had accused India of "distorting and misrepresenting facts".

A group of around 1,800 Sikh pilgrims is now in Islamabad to visit holy sites and shrines.

In a statement, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was "ironic" that the Indian government was accusing Pakistan of violating the 1974 Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines as New Delhi was "in clear violation" of the pact twice in a year.
