Legendary Danish king Bluetooth's trove unearthed in Germany

A 13-year-old boy and another amateur archaeologist have uncovered a "significant" trove of 1000-year-old coins, rings and bracelets linked to a Viking king.

Lead archaeologist Michael Schirren said, 'This trove is the biggest single discovery of Bluetooth coins in the southern Baltic Sea region and is therefore of great significance'.

Because they stayed silent concerning their original sighting, the full treasure trove was retrieved. As it turned out, was shining not a piece of foil, and the product of silver.

The boy, Luca Malaschnitschenko, and his teacher, Rene Schoen, were searching with metal detectors in January when they chanced upon the find of a lifetime. They were then invited to participate in the recovery.

Further excavations carried out over the 400 square metre site by a larger team over the following three months brought to light around 600 silver coins and a number of Thor's hammers, brooches, beads, rings and torques.

A coin unearthed at the dig. But when they cleaned it, they understood it was more precious. According to the Guardian, the oldest of the coins comes from the year 714, while the most recent one dates back to the year 983.

At that time Harald was at war with his son, Sweyn Forkbeard, so it is surmised that the hoard was buried by the king in his flight.

"We have here the rare case of a discovery that appears to corroborate historical sources", archaeologist Detlef Jantzen said.

Among the discoveries were several silver coins bearing images of a Christian cross, believed by historians to be among Denmark's first independent coins. He was known as Bluetooth probably because of a prominent discoloured tooth. This feat inspired Intel's Jim Kardach to name the tech service in honor of Bluetooth in 1997, given that "the new technology that would unify communications protocols like King Harald had united Scandinavia", according to Tom's Hardware, a Live Science sister site. The symbol of Bluetooth is also a mixture of two letters of runic alphabets representing the initials of King Harald.
