Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff puts his team's loss of performance relative to Ferrari at the Chinese Grand Prix down to not getting its tires working in cold conditions.

Daniel Ricciardo snatched victory in China from Mercedes and Ferrari on Sunday, after his Aston Martin Red Bull team took advantage of a safety vehicle on lap 31 to put fresh tyres on both their cars.

Lewis Hamilton is out of contract with Mercedes at the end of the 2018 season.

Ricciardo won ahead of the Mercedes-GP of Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari as championship leader Sebastian Vettel could only finish eighth after a collision with Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Verstappen was handed a 10-second penalty for the incident and finished fifth overall, being demoted behind Lewis Hamilton, who he had overtaken again following the crash.

"I was in no man's land. I was just trying to hold on for whatever I had". It's not what you want and it's easy to say afterwards "I should have waited". "It is disappointing, we gave it everything we had and it kind of feel we deserved the win today but we didn't get it today".

The former Williams driver thinks it could be the dawn of a new era for Ferrari as Mercedes take a step back after dominating the sport for the last four seasons since the start of the V6 Turbo era.

Bottas had done everything right, but the safety vehicle cost him dearly. "It's obviously cooler. It's a different track, so I think, honestly, the first two races have been quite different, so it's not that straightforward to predict the third one".

"He had a great day, great driving". You can see in long corners they make some good gains to us. In Q2 just 0.3s separated five cars from ninth to 13th and with mixed tyre strategies we appear to be set for another enthralling race for the lower points positions.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner had emphasised to Verstappen that he needed a clean weekend in Shanghai.

Shock: How Raikkonen didn't secure pole position in China we will never know.

Verstappen confessed he had got it wrong.

Sergey Sirotkin was knocked out in Q1 at the last minute when Sainz jumped up the order lap and pushed the Williams driver down to 16th place in the dying moments of the first stage of qualifying. The Briton made the switch from McLaren to Mercedes at the right time in 2013 and Hill feels he could consider his future if things don't change.

Vettel now leads the championship by 9 points with 54 points.

For the second week in a row, Bottas moved ahead of Raikkonen, while Verstappen fought his way past Hamilton and then Raikkonen, too, to take third.
