Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg are showing the way on taking responsibility

Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Facebook, testifies.

Facebook's priority should be protecting the personal data of its users, identifying and removing propaganda robots and content deemed to be directly harmful to any protected category of people; that advocates violence, theft, or property destruction; or that directly inflicts emotional distress on a specific private individual.

If Congress does not understand how Facebook works, they can not effectively or efficiently fix it.

UID is like an "identity card" that Facebook grants to users and it is the only way to identify a person.

Even if we don't say where we are, Facebook knows just by the IP address. But expecting much privacy in a business model that relies on selling your information is highly unrealistic.

The Guardian pointed out the absurdity this way: "Two tweets, one each from Sens".

For many people today, Facebook is more than a simple networking tool.

The Guardian continued: "The pair of Democrats were among the sharpest questioners of Zuckerberg on a day that was long on political theatrics and short on new information". He said so himself, stating that Facebook has always been about "community and connections".

Yet the hearings in Washington managed to showcase the normally press-shy Zuckerberg's ability to perform as an able and well-rehearsed, if a bit stiff, CEO of one of the world's biggest companies - and the degree to which much of Congress appears befuddled about technology and the relevant issues.

The FTC said its probe would determine whether Facebook had "failed" to protect users' privacy.

Man City crowned Premier League champions
Chelsea's 2004-05 side loved travelling, winning 15 times away from home, the only team to do so in the Premier League era. Better still, they swept opponents aside with style and swagger, scoring 93 league goals so far (United have 63).

The takeaway buzzword in the hearings, however, was "regulation".

It's a situation that firmly belongs in the "this sounded like a good idea at the time" department. Facebook is essentially a data wholesaler, period.

But Blumenthal wasn't buying it.

Cambridge Analytica flatly denied using Facebook data from Kogan's firm in the 2016 election or employing psychographic modeling techniques on behalf of Trump's campaign. Facebook, which said it is conducting an audit of how the feature can be misused, did not say when it would lift the block.

In his many responses to questions about GDPR, Zuckerberg did not commit to bring every element to consumers in the United Staes, so it's tough to tell exactly which portions of GDPR will make it to USA consumers.

But I'll take that risk, knowing what it is, and act accordingly. But he also dodged some important queries by invoking "his team".

"One of the more inflammatory statements in the post was "...we'll teach whites some lesson. He promised to rectify and improve privacy practices and put a legion of 20,000 techies to identify and clean up fake news and remove "hate" posts. All in all, it might be a public relations (PR) attempt that will present the platform as eager to self-regulate to stop any USA lawmakers' attempts of GDPR-like regulations in their tracks.

SEN. DURBIN: "Would you be comfortable sharing with us the name of the hotel you stayed in last night?"

Amid a revamp following the breakout of the data breach scandal involving Cambridge Analytica and Facebook, the social media giant announced a facelift for its "Bookmarks" section to facilitate easy access and navigation of settings. We can also all read the fine print, especially the lawyer-speak that might as well be in Swahili.

Mr. Zuckerberg was well prepared for his congressional testimony and was mostly able to stick to his talking points, while defending - but not necessarily explaining - his business model and peppering his responses with a generous measure of seemingly honest apology.
