A major smog indicator in China's industrial Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region rose by more than a quarter in March, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment said on Friday, raising concerns that pollution is increasing with the end of winter output restrictions.

In a move to further force China to lower the billions of goods trade surplus running with the US, Trump unveiled tariff representing about US$50 billion of technology, transport and medical products early this month, drawing an immediate threat of retaliatory action from Beijing.

In the first week of April, the U.S. announced tariffs worth $50 billion on Chinese products which, it said, was the result of Beijing forcing the American companies to transfer their technology to China's firms.

He also said "Cold War mentality" and arrogance had become obsolete and would be repudiated.

Fears of a trade war with the USA have also roiled markets in recent weeks, with Washington and Beijing exchanging warnings of tit-for-tat tariffs on a significant portion of their bilateral trade.

The administration is also expected to release a separate list for the additional proposed tariffs covering $100 billion in imports from China.

Xi said that China will sharply widen market access for foreign investors, a chief complaint of the country's trading partners and a point of contention for US President Donald Trump's administration, which has threatened billions of dollars in tariffs on Chinese goods.

The statistics bureau also will begin monthly release of a survey-based unemployment rate, the first regularly updated gauge for the world's biggest labor market that's similar to indexes for other major economies like the USA and Europe. Such a practice could technically be illegal.

"We don't strive for a favourable balance of trade (for China), the current state of trade affairs are shaped by the market", he told a briefing in Beijing. Separately, the Ministry of National Defense in Taipei said Wednesday that Tsai would pay a series of military visits to test combat readiness amid changes in global security conditions.

Ye Xiaqing, with the China Household Electrical Appliance Association, said that so far, only 5 per cent of household appliance exports to the United States were affected by the proposed increase in tariffs. "He's already pissed off enough people there".
